At the start of a swing movement you feet should be kept parallel and pointing to the direction of swing, this to allow a smooth forward/backward weight transfer from the whole foot to toes or visa versa. On a backward leg swing movement your foot is in-line with your leg and not turned out or in In the Foxtrot, due to the type of forward and backward movements, parallel feet are essential.
